Travel Diaries: Our Honeymoon in Mexico

We didn’t have the time to take a honeymoon right after our wedding, instead I was preparing to leave for England 4 days later, and Barry was preparing to start an intensive two week flight simulator training course. Once reunited in England, we prepared for our impending move to Jakarta, Indonesia, where Barry was set to start a job as a airline pilot. Three days before we were scheduled to set off for our new life in Jakarta, we received news that changed our course. Having unexpected time to kill, my savvy internet shopping husband found a great deal for a holiday package. With a week’s notice and over 4 months since our wedding, this was definitely an impromptu, belated honeymoon, but who cares, right? We headed to Tulum in the Mexican Riveria for two glorious weeks. Although 2 week holidays are common over here in Europe, growing up in the States it is much less common, and this was my first one! While I have travelled to Oaxaca, Mexico several times, Barry had never been to Mexico. We loved our time there, neither of us have ever felt so relaxed, and will no doubt cherish these memories for a long time to come.

Some of our favourite bits from Mexico (in no particular order):

1)Our couple’s massage. – We enjoyed the resort’s spa no sooner than our second day! Nothing puts you in holiday mode like a deep tissue massage.
2)The Mexican people, especially our maid at the resort - she returned our missing security box key!
3)The wedding party from Birmingham - they proved to be a very entertaining bunch one night in the lounge.
4)Cenotes (natural sink holes). I had the pleasure to swim in two while we were in Mexico – so beautiful!
5)Watching England play the Ukraine in the Euro 2012 in a theatre full of Brits at the resort AND the person who turned in my iPhone that I left there!
6)BIG CAT catamaran snorkelling trip – I got to snorkel with a sea turtle, and we learned Barry has a propensity for sea sickness.
7)Feeding the fish from the beach - I unashamedly took bread from the buffet and took great joy in feeding the beautiful fish, then I would snorkel with them. Love those fish, they were eating right out of my hand! (Barry, I learned, is not comfortable with fish swarming around him!)
8)Barry crashing the quad (4 wheeler) not once but TWICE into the Mexican jungle, and then boasting on Facebook!
9)I got the chance to not only swim with dolphins but interact with them as a Trainer for the Day.  Now I can finally tick that off my Bucket List. The resort that we stayed at also had a dolphinarium on sight, and Barry endured the heat and boredom to watch me, ALL DAY.
10)Barry also had the chance to tick something off of his Bucket List when we visited one of the 7 wonders of the world, Chichen Itza Mayan ruins. They were wicked, in spite of the oppressive heat and my dress impromptu ripping.

And the photos, I warn you there a lot of them....
